Inya

Cha Kwar

Sailing in Myanmar continues to be a sport that is enjoyed by our athletes and liesure sailors at Yangon Sailing Club. Although Yangon Sailing Club remains the only sailing club in the entire country, its founding in 1924 makes it one of the oldest sailing clubs in Asia. The entire Myanmar SSL team discovered our sailing roots and passion at Yangon Sailing Club where we all grew up sailing (and continue to compete weekly in our Club races) on the Inya Lake located in the center of Yangon (the old capital city of our nation). This is why we felt it was only fitting for us to choose “Inya” as our SSL Team name.

Inya Lake has further sailing heritage that is worth sharing. During the 2nd Southeast Asian Peninsular Games (now known as the SEA Games) held in 1961, Myanmar as host nation first introduced the sport of sailing into the SEA Games. The sailing event was held on Inya Lake and was raced on two class of boats known as the Sharpie and the Rater. Both the Sharpie and the Rater are wooden boats that were hand built using teak wood and are still raced every weekend at the Yangon Sailing Club to this day. Fun fact – sailing the Rater class at Yangon Sailing Club actually dates back to before World War II and since the founding of our Club. During depths of World War II when Myanmar was invaded, our passionate sailors were so concerned about our Raters that the entire fleet was intentionally sunk and kept under Inya Lake and only retrieved back after the end of the war. There are some Raters today that still have pieces of teak that date back to this time.

Although with only a single sailing club in the entire country, we boats an Optimist fleet of about 45 sailors and also about 40 sailors that compete in our Club races every weekend. Having the opportunity to sail and compete in the SSL was a dream come true for not only our Myanmar SSL Team, but also our entire sailing community, many of whom will be traveling to Thailand during the 2025 Asian Qualifiers to come and show their support.

THE CAPTAIN

SITHU MOE MYINT

Sithu was one of the very first four Optimist sailors when the Optimist was first introduced to Myanmar in 1991. Embraced the sport like a second religion and achieved 10,000 hours of on-water sailing (racing/training) by the age of 15; however only pursued the sport on the international stage until the age of 16 whilst only continuing sailing at Yangon Sailing Club thereafter. Became the youngest member in Yangon Sailing Club history to serve on the Club Committee at the age of 19, the youngest person to serve as Vice Commodore at the age of 32, and the youngest person to serve as Comodore at the age of 38. He has won 2xGold 1xBronze in the Southeast Asian Games; remains deeply passionate about coaching/mentoring; and remains an avid weekend club sailor.

THE CAPTAIN

THE LEADERS

Sai Pyae Sone Hein

Sai, referred to as XO given his Deputy Captain role, concurrently serves as Head Coach of the Myanmar Yachting Federation. He is a former 470 national level sailor with 1xGold medal in the Southeast Asian Games. He joined sailing late and was poached from the Myanmar Junior National Volleyball Team on account of his athleticism and desire to transition towards watersports (ironically he comes from Shan State which is one of the most mountaneous regions in Myanmar). He also serves on the Yangon Sailing Club Committee as Captain of Boats overseeing all wooden/teak boat building/refurbishment activities of the Club.

Su Myat Soe

Su Myat has secured the highest levels of performance excellence for Myanmar sailing on the world stage by securing 3th overall in the International Women’s 420 Open World Championships hosted in Ravenna, Italy in 2001. She has won 1xGold 2xSilver in the Southeast Asian Games and serves as Vice Commodore on the Yangon Sailing Club Committee and also serves as the President of the Optimist Dinghy Association of Myanmar. She is also a medical doctor and a renown child care specialist in Myanmar.

THE LEADERSTHE LEADERS

THE YOUTH FACTOR

The the star youngling of SSL Team Myanmar is the Bow (Min Thaw Kaung). Min Thaw Kaung has secured multiple Club and National Championships titles over recent years and has wreaked havoc on the more experienced/senior sailors in weekend racing. He is known to be a maverick who hits more than he misses during lake sailing where windshifts and constant adjustment of race strategy is a fundamnetal requirement to succeed.
